Frequently Asked Questions

What is a citation?

Whether you use an entire passage from someone else's work, or you paraphrase an argument within your paper, citation is the process of giving credit for information that isn't your own.

Why do we cite our sources?

Plagiarism is defined as "the uncredited use (both intentional and unintentional) of somebody else's words or ideas." (Purdue).

As a student at Marshall, you are responsible for your own academic integrity.  Violations of the Marshall Honor Code could impact your grades and may lead to consequences from your teacher and administrator.  Outside of school, you could lose your job and your professional credibility.
